Today at the tutoring center, we made beaded bracelets and pop-up books. There was a whole lot of folding involved and the kids quickly got the hang of it.
Once they were finished making the larger books, they started to make smaller books with the leftover scrap. Not a scrap went to waste; they kept making books and little folding flowers until the paper was all gone. One thing we’ve noticed about the kids here is that they are content for much longer doing one activity. We had some flannel dolls and clothing set out and boys and girls played with these for an hour. You give toys to American kids and you’d be lucky if they play with them for 15 minutes before they ask you “What’s next?”
One way to really win friends among the kids is to take their photo. They love being in pictures and they want to see them afterwards! So cute!
We celebrated Mark Mark’s birthday today. Katy’s mom went to Orange Brutus and picked up the last whole Monster Cake they had in stock. She went just in time; the other Monster Cake had a big slice cut out of it.
After Mark Mark blew out the candles, he got to open his present. Since he was expecting socks, he was extremely surprised to get this new I-Touch.
And just look at the grin on his face! I’d say that qualifies as ear to ear. There’s a great story behind this present and you know how I love great stories. On the way home to the Philippines, Carol stopped by Hawaii to spend some time with Brendon at Surf the Nations. Surf the Nations is an organization of surfers who run a food bank, surf in Hawaii and around the world and use surfing to share Jesus with the people they meet around the world. Carol was flying standby and couldn’t get a flight back to Cebu, but it worked out in her favor that day. When she went back to STN, she got to meet Uncle Jimmy. Uncle Jimmy isn’t really anybody’s uncle, but he is a huge supporter of STN. Uncle Jimmy owns a pretty successful electronics company on the island. He lives humbly and likes to bless others with electronics when he visits the mission. That day when Uncle Jimmy came to STN, he had two I-Touches with him. These electronic blessings are given through a game of rock-paper-scissors. Knowing it would make the perfect present for her son turning 14, Carol said she wanted in on this game. She won! She won the I-Touch, and it did in fact make the perfect present for Mark.
